Who we are
Understudy (understudy.to) provides the platform coaches use to create and run an AI video twin of themselves. When you talk to a coach's twin, the coach is the person you have the relationship with; we run the technology behind it.
What we collect
From coaches
- Biometric data. To build your twin we process your face and voice from the video you record. These are used to create a face and voice model with our AI provider so the twin can look and sound like you.
- Consent records. Your likeness/voice licence, your separate biometric consent, and your consent video — including the timestamp, the passcode shown at recording, and the disclosure version you agreed to.
- Account and content. Name, email, coaching niche, website, booking link, and the material you upload or import to train your twin.
From visitors and clients
- Contact details. Name and email captured at the gate before a session.
- Session recordings and transcripts. Conversations with a twin are recorded and transcribed so the coach can follow up and the twin can remember you. You are told this and must consent before a session starts.
- We never build a voiceprint of a visitor. We do not create a speaker model or biometric template of anyone talking to a twin — only the coach's own likeness is modelled.
Our AI providers (subprocessors)
We use trusted subprocessors to run the twins. The core ones are Tavus and OpenAI:
- Tavus — creates and runs the live video twin (the face and voice model, and the real-time video call).
- OpenAI — runs the twin's conversation and transcription.
- Supabase — stores account data, transcripts, and uploaded content.
We have data processing agreements with our AI providers and, where the setting is available, enable their privacy modes so your data is not used to train their models and is retained for the minimum needed to run the service.
Where your data goes (international transfers)
Our database is hosted in Sydney, Australia. Some of our AI providers process data in the United States, so if you are in Australia, the EU, or the UK, your data may be transferred to and processed in the US under appropriate safeguards (such as standard contractual clauses). We do not rely on the Australian small-business exemption — we apply these protections regardless.
How long we keep it, and deletion
A coach can offboard at any time. When they do, the twin is deactivated immediately so it stops responding, and we then delete the training footage and the face/voice models at both our platform and our AI providers within our stated window. Biometric models are destroyed, not just hidden.
We keep proof-of-consent records for the period required by law even after the account is gone — that record is what shows the deletion was authorised.
Your rights
- Access and export. You can request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Deletion. You can ask us to delete your data, and a coach can request deletion of their twin and everything behind it.
- Withdraw consent. You can withdraw consent to biometric processing; for a coach this means the twin is taken down and the models deleted.
